(JollofNews) – The vice president of the Gambia, Fatoumata Tambajang, has reiterated the government’s commitment to promote an open society and democracy.
She said the government of President Adama Barrow stands to create an enabling environment for everybody to participate.
Ms Tambajang made these remarks Wednesday at the launching of the Banjul branch of the US-based Democratic Union of Gambian Activists (DUGA) at the auditorium of the Faculty of Law, University of The Gambia (UTG).
Highlighting the new trend of openness that is gradually taking its shape since President Adama Barrow came to power, the Gambia’s second-in-command made it clear that they are not going to look back.
“What we are looking at is we don’t betray the Gambian people. We want Gambians to take charge of the narrative,” she added.
“We need to unite. Gambians were able to take over their country because of they were able to rise above their differences. Gambians have not only fought for regime change, but also for systemic change.”
Ms Tambajang lifted a corner of the veil on the sacrifices cabinet ministers have made in order to keep the momentum alive.
“We are putting efforts that would really move this country forward. This gov’t works to leave a legacy.”
She said the new government is open for discussion as more space is being created for civil society groups and the media to push for enhanced engagement.
“Let’s build our country together,” she said in an attempt to clear up the air over any confusion about their readiness to put transparency and accountability at the centre stage of democratic governance.
