President Adama Barrow has dismissed opposition coalition efforts as inherently unstable, arguing that competing presidential ambitions and internal rivalries make such alliances incapable of delivering effective governance.
The President made the remarks while addressing a mass political rally organised by Team First Lady in Jambur Village, Kombo South District.
Speaking to a large gathering of supporters, President Barrow used a traditional metaphor involving a well and a rope to illustrate what he described as the fundamental weaknesses of opposition coalition arrangements.
“They formed a coalition so they could unite, but the news coming out is that the rope has snapped,” President Barrow told the crowd.
“If the one with the long rope could not draw water from the well to drink, how can the one with the short rope reach it? You have a long rope that cannot reach the water, and another with a short rope how on earth do you expect to draw water?”
The President said he had previously warned opposition politicians that political alliances formed primarily around ambition, rather than a shared vision, would eventually collapse.
According to President Barrow, leadership rivalries and the desire of multiple political actors to occupy the same top position made lasting unity impossible.
“When they were making that agreement, I told them this would not work because God will not bless it,” he said.
“This one wants one thing, while they all want to be President and are competing for positions. If everyone wants a single position, can ten people share one seat? That is impossible, and that is why unity could never last among them.”
President Barrow further argued that effective governance requires stability, clear leadership and a common political direction qualities he said opposition alliances have struggled to demonstrate because of competing interests.
Reaffirming his confidence in his administration and political standing, the President said his government remains firmly in place and ready for future electoral contests.
“President Barrow is standing right where he stood before,” he declared. “Whenever they are ready, let them come I am ready.”
The President also expressed confidence in his continued support across several regions of the country, including the West Coast Region, Lower River Region and North Bank Region.
He said he was confident that his performance in the December elections would surpass previous electoral milestones, signalling his determination to secure another strong mandate as political parties continue their preparations for the 2026 presidential election.
