Bensouda Says UMC Has State House Sources, Defends Criticism Of Government

Unite Party leader Talib Ahmed Bensouda has dismissed claims that his frequent criticism of the executive is based on speculation or political grandstanding, insisting that his party’s positions are informed by credible and verified information.

Speaking on his party’s engagement with national issues, Bensouda said the Unite Party has access to reliable information through contacts within the presidency, allowing it to closely monitor developments inside government.

“We have insiders all throughout the State House,” Bensouda said.

He argued that such access should not be viewed as unusual, noting that The Gambia is a small and closely connected country where information naturally circulates, particularly within public institutions.

According to Bensouda, the presidency is a public office, and the flow of information helps ensure that opposition parties remain informed about government decisions and internal developments.

Bensouda Rejects Claims of Intimidation

Bensouda also rejected allegations that he commands an unofficial group of aggressive supporters often described by critics as “soldiers” or “Baye Falls” to intimidate political opponents.

He said such claims are unfounded and maintained that the Unite Party is instead pursuing reforms aimed at promoting discipline and responsible political engagement among its supporters.

The party, he revealed, is drafting a comprehensive code of conduct that will establish clear standards of behaviour for members and supporters while encouraging constructive dialogue and issue-based politics.

According to Bensouda, the proposed code is intended to reduce hostility in the political space and foster a culture of respectful democratic engagement as political activities gather momentum.

The Unite Party leader said the initiative reflects his party’s commitment to strengthening internal discipline and contributing to a healthier political environment through policy-driven debate rather than confrontation.
