Former Jungler Sanna Manjang Arrested, GAF Confirms

Sanna Manjang, a former member of the paramilitary Junglers unit that operated under ex-president Yahya Jammeh, has been arrested, the Gambia Armed Forces confirmed today.

His detention marks a significant moment for victims who have waited years to see key suspects brought back into the reach of Gambian authorities.

Manjang’s name appeared often during the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission hearings. Witnesses placed him at the center of enforced disappearances, torture and extrajudicial killings carried out during Jammeh’s rule. Many families affected by those past crimes have repeatedly called for his arrest since he fled the country in 2016.

GAF spokesperson Major Malick Sanyang said the military is coordinating with partner agencies but did not give details on where Manjang was detained or when he will be transferred into full Gambian custody. He simply noted that the institution is “working with its partners to do the needful.”

Manjang has been on the radar of Gambian authorities and international rights groups for years. Reports suggested he moved between countries in the region, making efforts to avoid arrest while victims pushed for justice.

Reactions began pouring in shortly after confirmation of his capture. Families of those who died or disappeared during the Jammeh years said they hope this will lead to criminal proceedings that reflect the gravity of the allegations. Advocacy groups have also urged the state to act quickly and follow due process.
