The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has intercepted over 170 would-be migrants in a major operation along the country’s coastal regions.
The operation, which comes amid increased surveillance efforts, was carried out through coordinated enforcement among key units within the department.
Speaking to the press, Siman Low, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the GID, said the action was part of ongoing efforts to curb irregular migration and reduce the risks linked to unsafe travel routes.
He confirmed that those intercepted include nationals from The Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, and Liberia. Among them were 25 minors and a pregnant woman, all apprehended at various coastal points.
The GID has again stressed its commitment to national security and the protection of Gambian lives. The department is calling on the public to avoid irregular migration and warned of the dangers and long-term consequences that come with it.
PRO Low also disclosed that two suspected smugglers are currently at large. One is a landlord, identified as Sorrie Ceesay, and the other, Abdoulie Yafa, is believed to be the main organiser behind the foiled attempt.
In a separate operation on Friday, 20th June 2025, immigration officers intercepted another group of 46 would-be migrants. The group included 6 Gambians, 23 Senegalese, 7 Guineans, 6 Malians, and 4 Ivorians. In total, 41 were male and 5 female, including one female minor.
Authorities identified the suspected smugglers in this case as Abdoulie Lowe, a Senegalese national, and Adama Dem, a Gambian.
The GID has restated its commitment to dismantling smuggling networks and stopping the exploitation of vulnerable individuals trying to migrate through irregular means.
“We are urging communities to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest security post,” said PRO Low. “Investigations into all these cases are ongoing, and the suspects will be processed according to the laws of The Gambia. We commend the dedication of our officers and partners for their tireless efforts in safeguarding our borders.”
