GPU Announces Key Changes Ahead Of 2025 Journalism Awards

The Gambia Press Union (GPU) has unveiled major updates to its National Journalism Awards, set to take place in early December 2025. Marking the 10th edition of the annual event, the union says this year’s celebration will be the most significant yet, with new rules, an extended submission window, and expanded categories aimed at strengthening the quality and inclusivity of media recognition in the country.

Speaking during the announcement, GPU President Ms. Isatou Keita said only registered union members in good standing those who have fully paid their membership dues will be eligible to submit entries.

She explained the decision is meant to reinforce the union’s role and encourage greater professionalism within the Gambian media landscape.

“This change is about upholding standards and ensuring that the people who benefit from the awards are also contributing to the growth of the profession through active participation in the union,” Ms. Keita said.

Ms. Theresa Gomez, Vice Chair of the National Journalism Awards Committee, shared further updates on behalf of Committee Chair Haruna Drammeh. Among the key changes is an expanded eligibility period: stories published between January 2024 and July 2025 will now be considered.

This year’s edition will also feature a broader set of award categories to encourage diverse participation across the industry. While traditional areas such as Political Reporting, Security, Business, and Investigative Journalism remain, the committee hinted at welcoming entries from more sectors of the media.

Gomez stressed the importance of independence in the judging process, noting that the panel will operate under strict criteria to maintain the credibility of the awards. “We are focused on originality, fairness, and impact. This is about honouring work that strengthens democracy and contributes to national development,” she said.

As the GPU prepares to commemorate a decade of the National Journalism Awards, there is growing anticipation across the country’s media community. Submissions are expected to open in the coming weeks, setting the stage for what many expect to be a historic night celebrating the best in Gambian journalism.
