Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr. Ismaila Ceesay has sparked debate after criticising young people who frequently participate in street protests, claiming many of them lack family responsibilities and are driven by a desire to create unrest.
Speaking at a National People’s Party (NPP) mega rally in Brikama, Dr. Ceesay departed from his typically measured tone to deliver a sharp rebuke of youth-led demonstrations.
“The youth that are mostly engaged in street protests are without any family responsibility,” he told party supporters. He further alleged that the main objective of such protesters is “to ensue chaos and violence.”
His remarks come amid growing political engagement among Gambian youth, many of whom have used public demonstrations to voice concerns over economic challenges, unemployment, governance issues, and accountability.
Despite his criticism, Dr. Ceesay called on young people to channel their energy into national development rather than street activism. He said the government remains committed to empowering youth through investments in vocational training, skills development, and higher education.
According to the minister, the current administration has made youth welfare a key priority and continues to expand opportunities aimed at improving livelihoods and enhancing employability.
