Jah Oil Multi-factory has been turning away the cement trucks of some vocal members of the Gambia Cement Importers and Agents Association of The Gambia in what was seen in some quarters as a retaliatory measure.
There was an onrush of cement trucks to the Jah cement factory in Brikama recently when the Gambia government announced the availability of cement stock there, assuring the greater public that cement would be available for everyone.
However, sources informed JollofNews that Jah cement re-bagging factory has been reportedly turning down the cement orders placed by some members of the Gambia’s biggest cement importers and agents trade union for leading the charge in the campaign for the removal of the government’s 180% cement tariffs.
“Six trucks belonging to one of our members Baboucarr Mbye were turned away by Jah Multi-factory a few days ago. And before that all the orders that he made were rejected after paying his money to the factory,” a member of the Cement Importers and Agents Association of The Gambia explained to JollofNews.
“He was not the only one denied cement by Jah Oil for taking a firm stance against the cement tariff that the government said was introduced to protect Jah Oil and other local cement factories against imported cement,” said one of our informants.
Meanwhile, multiple sources informed JollofNews that Baboucarr Mbye has financed many resistance efforts against the cement tariff through a sustained media campaign.
“He is a victim of his resolute stance against the cement tariffs. We heard that Hamidou Jah personally threatened that Baboucarr would never get a cement supply from Jah factory because of his advocacy role against the cement tariffs,” a source told JollofNews.
Jah Oil did not respond to our questions about the reported victimization of Baboucarr Mbye and his brother by the company.
