Minister Keita Presents 2026 Budget With Focus On Gambian Wellbeing

Finance and Economic Affairs Minister Seedy KM Keita has presented the 2026 Appropriation Bill to the National Assembly, outlining a budget aimed at improving the living standards of Gambians and strengthening economic gains.

Presenting the budget on Friday, Minister Keita said the country’s economic outlook remains positive, with real GDP growth in 2025 estimated at 5.9 percent. He said the government intends to build on this progress through strategic investments in key sectors that directly affect citizens.

The 2026 budget amounts to D52.4 billion. According to the Minister, human capital development and inclusive growth form the core of the government’s spending priorities. Social sectors including health, education, and agriculture are collectively allocated D18.6 billion, representing more than a third of total government expenditure.

“These investments are essential to giving Gambians better opportunities and improving their quality of life,” he said.

Minister Keita also underlined the government’s commitment to stronger financial governance. He said reforms in Public Financial Management continue to advance, with programme-based budgeting expanding across ministries and new institutions such as the Anti-Corruption Commission moving toward full operation.

In his closing remarks, the Minister thanked President Adama Barrow, development partners, and lawmakers for their support and engagement in the national planning process.

With the budget speech now tabled, members of the National Assembly will begin their scrutiny and debate of the Appropriation Bill before voting on its passage.
