Foni Bintang Karanai NAM and United Gambian Front (UGF) presidential aspirant Bakary K. Badjie has pledged to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to corruption if elected president of The Gambia.
Mr Badjie made the declaration on Friday during a press conference held at his political office at Mariama Kunda Junction, where he provided an update on his presidential campaign ahead of the December presidential election.
Addressing journalists, the UGF presidential hopeful said accountability, transparency and strict enforcement of the law would form the foundation of his administration.
He said his government would ensure that audit reports are given the attention they deserve and that individuals found responsible for corruption would be held accountable, regardless of their political affiliation.
“My first step in tackling corruption is to ensure that all audit reports are respected. Every audit report will be treated with urgency, and once the Finance and Public Accounts Committee submits its findings, strict action will be taken. Whoever is found wanting for corruption must face the full force of the law, regardless of their political affiliation,” Mr Badjie said.
The pledge forms a central part of his campaign message, with the UGF aspirant promising to strengthen public financial management and restore public confidence in the country’s accountability and anti-corruption institutions.
Mr Badjie also addressed the challenges facing Gambian youths, particularly the growing desire among many young people to seek opportunities abroad due to limited economic prospects at home.
He said his vision was to build a Gambia where young people could pursue their ambitions and achieve success without feeling compelled to leave the country.
“I want a better future for every Gambian, a door that opens for everyone. Today, too many young people believe their future is somewhere else. I want every child to believe that success is possible here in The Gambia. Whether you live in Banjul or in the smallest village, you matter to us,” he said.
The UGF presidential aspirant called on Gambians from all backgrounds to support his campaign as the country moves closer to the December presidential election.
He said the future of the country could not be built by one individual but required the collective effort of Gambians.
“Our future will not be built by one man. It will be built by all Gambians. I call upon every Gambian, young and old, to join me in building the future of our nation, and that journey begins now,” Mr Badjie said.
