Agriculture Minister Demba Sabally has launched a fresh attack on United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, questioning his suitability for national leadership after reports emerged that the veteran opposition politician misplaced his mobile phone during a recent public event.
Addressing thousands of supporters at a National People’s Party (NPP) rally in Brikama on Saturday evening, Sabally used the alleged incident to challenge Darboe’s ability to manage state affairs and safeguard public resources.
According to the minister, Darboe reportedly lost his mobile phone while attending the inauguration of a mosque in Salikenni Village. Sabally argued that such a personal mishap raises concerns about the UDP leader’s capacity to oversee the nation’s finances if elected president.
“If Darboe couldn’t secure his personal mobile phone, securing the state coffers will be a much bigger problem for him if elected to office,” Sabally told the cheering crowd.
Sabally also accused the UDP leader of being envious of President Adama Barrow, alleging that Darboe rented a luxury vehicle similar to the President’s official car for his visit to Salikenni Village.
According to the Agriculture Minister, the move was intended to project a presidential image and mirror the status associated with the country’s highest office.
The minister further weighed in on ongoing discussions among opposition parties aimed at forming a united front ahead of future elections. He expressed skepticism about the prospects of any opposition alliance, arguing that competing ambitions among political leaders could undermine efforts to build a cohesive coalition.
Sabally claimed that several opposition figures are more interested in securing leadership positions than advancing a common political agenda, making any potential alliance difficult to sustain.
“The opposition cannot stay together because too many people want to lead,” he said.
Political parties across the country have intensified consultations and engagements as preparations gradually gather pace for future electoral contests, with discussions about possible opposition cooperation continuing in various political circles.
Concluding his address, Sabally urged Gambians to reject the opposition and support the NPP-led alliance, which he said remains committed to maintaining political stability and advancing national development.
He called on voters in Brikama and across the country to back President Barrow’s administration to ensure the continuation of ongoing infrastructure, agricultural and social development initiatives.
