The United Nations Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, Leonardo Santos Simão, has wrapped up a three-day visit to The Gambia, reaffirming the UN’s strong support for the country’s democratic and constitutional reform efforts.
During his visit, Mr. Simão met with President Adama Barrow and commended the ongoing constitutional reform process as a key step toward national reconciliation and democratic consolidation. He stressed the importance of national ownership and inclusivity to ensure widespread public acceptance.
Mr. Simão also held talks with Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara, Solicitor General Hussein Thomasi, Speaker of the National Assembly Fabakary Tombong Jatta, and National Human Rights Commission Chair Emmanuel Joof. He further engaged with political parties, the Inter-Party Committee, civil society, development partners, and the UN Country Team.
“The UN remains committed to supporting The Gambia’s journey toward a stronger democracy and lasting peace,” he said, urging continued constructive dialogue among all stakeholders.
The visit comes amid key national reforms following the recommendations of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC).
