Gambia’s GMC Calls For Opposition Unity

Mai Fatty(JollofNews) – An opposition leader in the Gambia has called on opposition parties in the country to reconcile their differences and put the nation above personal ambitions.

Mai Ahmed Fatty, leader of the Gambia Moral Congress party (GMC) said the Gambian opposition should be ashamed of itself if it refuses to get its house in order in next year’s general elections.
Forming a united front has always been a big challenged for Gambia’s opposition. Since 2001, opposition parties have tried and failed to set up a formidable coalition against President Yahya Jammeh in the country’s periodic elections.Mai Fatty
But Mr Fatty said the Gambian people deserve better from opposition parties and any failure by opposition leaders to reconcile their differences, unite for a common purpose and put the nation above personal ambition will be an unpardonable offence.
The GMC leader also called on Gambians to collectively jettison their personal political ambitions and misconceived personal differences in favour of superior national interest.
“If we relent in successfully striving to fix the broken electoral system as a singular united goal, we can all kiss good bye to credible elections,” Mr Fatty wrote on his party’s Facebook page following the opposition victory in Nigeria’s election.
He added: “If we do not collectively jettison our personal political ambitions and misconceived personal differences in favour of superior national interest by concretising a united alliance, our collective political fortunes shall continue to yield disastrous political dividend; if we do not end the Diaspora-opposition dichotomy trading blames and accusations and misplaced mutual expectations, the path to harmonious working relationship shall remain laden with unsurmountable thorny obstacles; and if we fail to resolve our internal inconstancies at both ends (Diaspora/internal opposition), we shall collectively fail our posterity, and betray our collective conscience.”
