(JollofNews) – The Gambia’s opposition parties have unanimously endorsed Adama Barrow of the United Democratic Party (UDP) as their presidential candidate in the December 2016 presidential elections.
Mr Barrow, was elected by 308 opposition delegates at a convention on Sunday at the Kairaba Hotel, Kololi, just weeks ahead of the election slated for December 1.
The Gambia will also hold legislative in April 2017 and local elections in April 2018.
The tiny West African state is being ruled with an iron fist by President Yahya Jammeh who seized power in July 1994.
His regime is often accused by human rights organisations of gross human rights violations including summary executions, arbitrary arrests, and continuous clamp down on the media.
Before the nation’s last presidential vote in 2011, the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) said Jammeh’s control of the media and intimidation of voters meant the election could not be free and fair.
Mr Jammeh took 73 percent of the vote.
