(JollofNews) – The leader of the Gambia’s main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), Adama Barrow, has resigned from his party to enable him lead a coalition of opposition parties in next month’s presidential elections.

Last night, the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS), reported that the UDP leader resigned from the party with immediate effect, causing confusion within the opposition camp without elaborating further.

But this paper can confirmed that Mr Barrow, who was recently elected to head a coalition of seven opposition parties will submit his nomination papers tomorrow at the country’s independent electoral commission.

Mr Barrow’s resignation from the UDP is in accordance with section 104 (2) of the country’s election act which prohibits candidates from belonging to two political parties.

Mr Barrow, 51, became leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), the country’s largest opposition party, in September. He succeeded Ousainou Darboe, who was jailed in July for three years for taking part in an ‘unauthorised’ street protest against the regime of Yahya Jammeh.
