Gambia 2016: Coalition Flag Bearer Due To be Nominated

fb_img_1478621600768(JollofNews) – The flag bearer of the opposition coalition in the Gambia is heading to the country’s electoral commission to file his nomination as president Yahya Jammeh’s main challenger in next month’s elections.

Adama Barrow, 51, is being accompanied to the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) office on Bertil Harding Highway, Kanifing by his opposition backers including Halifa Sallah of the People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), Hamat Bah of the National Reconciliation Party (NRP), Dr Isatou Touray; the Independent candidate, Mai Ahmad Fatty of the Gambia Moral Congress (GMC), Dr. Lamin Bolonding Bojang of the National Convention Party (NCP), Aji Yam Secka; deputy party leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Omar Amadou Jallow of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and Henry Gomez of the Gambia Party for Democracy and Progress (GPDP). He is also accompanied by a musical fanfare of various cultural groups.

As part of the nomination process, Mr Barrow will submit various documents for scrutiny including a declaration of his assets and prove of income tax payment.

The Gambia with a population of less than two million, will hold presidential election on 1st December with 886, 578 Gambians expected to vote, according official figures from the electoral commission.

The country is being ruled by president Yahya Jammeh since July 1994 who is seeking a fifth term in office.
