(JollofNews) – Gambia’s main opposition figure has challenged the country’s electoral body to discharge its duties in a transparent and fairly manner.

Adama Barrow said a lot is at stake in next month’s presidential election and him and his colleagues in the opposition will only accept the results that is free, fair, transparent and reflected the wishes of the Gambian people.

Speaking at the electoral commission’s office on Wednesday where he submitted his nomination papers, Mr Barrow, 51, added: “The Independent Electoral Commission is expected to be independent and fair  and the outcome of the election will only be accepted by the coalition if the election is presided over accordingly.”

The father of five added that opposition parties in the country and their supporters will adhere at all times to the laws of the Gambia to ensure that the election is violence free.

He said the all opposition leaders out of patriotism have put the country’s interest first by forming a united front against President Yahya Jammeh’s ruling APRC party.

Mr Barrow added: “It was not easy for us to come together as political parties. Even to bring a family as one is difficult. We have compromised a lot as leaders for the interest of the Gambian people.

“I am being backed by strong people with strong technical background who can ensure the quick development of the country particularly fixing the ailing economy of the country.”
