Coalition: Gambia’s Jammeh To Be ‘Rebel Leader’ If Clings To Power

Outgoing Gambian leader, Yahya Jammeh

(JollofNews) – Gambian President Yahya Jammeh will effectively become a “rebel leader” if he fails to leave office at the end of his mandate in January, the government-in-waiting said Sunday.

Halifa Sallah, a spokesman for the opposition coalition that spurred president-elect Adama Barrow to victory over Jammeh in a December 1 poll, said the longtime leader risked transforming himself into a rebel leader if he tried to stay on beyond his mandate.

“Any president who loses constitutional legitimacy becomes a rebel,” Sallah said.

“Anybody who is a military officer or civil servant who refuses to be under another constitutional authority obviously would also become a rebel,” he added.

The Gambia’s top brass have flip-flopped over whether they will remain loyal to Jammeh, drawing warnings from the international community.

On Saturday the regional ECOWAS bloc said West African leaders would attend Barrow’s inauguration and would “take all necessary actions to enforce the results”.

Sallah spoke after reading an address to the nation on Barrow’s behalf that made clear the president-elect intended to take power in January once Jammeh’s five-year mandate expired.

“The constitution orders that I assume office on the day the term of office of outgoing President Jammeh expires. He assumed office on 19th January 2012. His term expires in January 2017,” Barrow said in the statement.

“On the day his term expires my term as the lawful President of The Gambia begins,” he added.

  1. It is right move.To avoid the coming into Force of the APRCs hidden Agenda to unleash bloodshed in the R egion. The Gambias Champion Status in human rights in the Region was stained when these soldiers with difference as they called themselves nearly captured the Hearts and minds of Gambias especially the youths.

  2. Why not have a reelection as clearly there was a lot of flaw in the 1 Dec election. If Mr. Jammeh has the right to fight the results within 10 days after declaring, he must have the right to express.

  3. This is nonsense, when did you ever see a rematch just because the losing side decides to reject the result days after the referee has declared a winner? If you have nothing to say just shut up.

  4. Jammeh does not care about Gambia or Gambians. I am not surprised to see that useless Yankouba Touray going to court on behalf of Yaya Jammeh. They committed crimes together, let’s not be fooled by the so called soldiers. Gambians should come in full force and support Adama Barrow come January 19th. Yaya does not own Gambia and its time for all of us to die for our motherland. Burn gas stations, burn office and cause chaos if he refuse to leave.

  5. Yahya has no respect for Gambians, we voted and you lost, why still cling on to power. You are as evil as your mother, how can she idly sit and watch you butchered Gambians with impunity. You will die and InshaAllah go to the hell fire, you bastard. You know why you wants to remain in power, don’t you think its about time for you to visit your hotel(Mile 2). Gambians are no fools, you bastard. Edaward Singhateh, Sana Sabally, Ousman Sonko, Yankouba Touray should all be hanged. They are all murderers and bastards
