Gambian Lawmaker Defends Jammeh’s Election Challenge

Seedy Njie

(JollofNews) – A nominated member of the Gambia’s National Assembly has become the first lawmaker in the country to publicly defend President Yahya Jammeh’s challenge to the results of the December 1st presidential election.

Seedy Njie said Mr Jammeh’s lawsuit to the supreme court was done in accordance with the laws of the country and Gambians should respect the rule of law and wait for the decision of the court.

“The petition was done in accordance with section 49 of the constitution which stats that any registered political party which had participated in the presidential election or an independent candidate who has participated in such an election may apply to the supreme court to determine the validity of the result of a president by filing a petition within 10 days of the declaration of the result of the election,” he said.

Mr Njie who was nominated to the country’s lawmaking body by President Jammeh said the lawsuit was filed to the court within a week after the announcement of the results.

He said there were serious irregularities in the election and thousands of Gambians with voters’ cards were denied voting even though they were at the polling centres before polling closed.

“There are ample evidence of that and there are also evidence that Independent Electoral Commission officials denied the APRC polling agents access to polling stations until late in the day,” he added.

“There is no law anywhere in the world that states one cannot concede defeat and change his or her mind when the person realised some irregularities.

“Currently as we speak Hillary Clinton conceded defeat in the US Presidential Election but the Democrats are going to court and in fact some states are recounting the votes.”

Mr Njie called on Gambians to desist from inciting violence and using social media to hurl insults at Mr Jammeh and his party officials.

He added: “Let’s do away with false rumours and misleading information. Let parents and religious leaders preach peace as we await the outcome of the matter before the court.”

  1. This guy is an ignorant piece of trash .

  2. Gambian must realise that the law of the land permitso President Jammeh to challenge the IEC decision. The world and you Gambian are must get your facts right. Do not be fooled by certain People who are soo so against the president that they go to any extant to spread false rumors.

    • No one is denying that Jammeh shouldn’t fill a petition. Constitutionally he has right to fill but he does not have the damn right to declare the elections void before even filling the petition and sized the IEC offices which is unlawful . He has declared a prelude to what he wants the Supreme court to do, a court that has been tainted by Jammeh and APRC. One must stick to the truth, my friend . Jammeh thought Gambia is his and he claimed that elections would never unseat him. I used to admire Jammeh growing up and I am grateful for what he has done during his first 2 terms, but he has become power hungry and greedy just like most African leaders who never tolerate criticism, dictatorship and the same failed promises for the past 10 years. After 22 years in power , one must realize that every 1000 miles shall end. Gambians want a new direction, hope and freedom. The will of the people will finally prevail. May God bless The Gambia.

    • No one say he have no right to challenge the result to the court but he have no right to annul the result. And after all he is the very one who choose Mommar Njie and his team to conduct the election. I think would have been fair enough to say Mommar Njie cited with him and rig the election but he cited with the opposition. U and Jammeh are just a joke. Just listen to Jammeh and listen to what u wrote in here. He have no heart for gambia. If he does he woould by now leave as pressure just pilling on him.

  3. I am so surprise that people like Seedy Njie who shamelessly came out to defend the indefensible.Shame on you Seedy Njie for defending Yahya Jammeh,a man who ordered the killings of countless innocent Gambians and non Gambians. You can defend him as you like but there is no way in hell that this arrogant nincompoop will be allowed a day later than his term to remain as head of state of The Gambia. He will either have to go voluntarily in disgrace or we will force out by any means necessary and he can go to hell with his stooges like yourself. So seedy Njie shut your trap tight.

  4. Seedy is a fool don’t mine him

  5. I never heard on this world an opposition rig an election that a dictator held. He appointed his own ice members and sponsor it by himself. He did total blackout on internet and international calls and believe the ice and and the opposition rig his election. Jammeh and Seedy have no place in that country because they have no heart for our country. He lost let him leave us alone. Let him not creat a bloodshed in our country. I never knew that Yaya is a lier until his meeting with those so-called African bar association. We don’t want him. 22 yrs of rule and hardship is enough. Let him leave. Is it by force to rule a nation who’s people don’t want u to rule them?

  6. No winner in the war ,,,but Senegal are prepared to send troops to Gambia it gonna extend to casamance as Casamance fighters will stand as we all knew that

  7. Yaya Jammeh is a man of GOD let’s be careful of what we Say’s remember who JAH bless no one course

  8. Hmmm Gambian has tolerate a lot from Jammeh, he has all the right to make a U-Turn after conceded defeat and he has all the right to go supreme court but the right he don’t have is to void election. Mr Njie you just responded to the question that is not been ask and left the one that required answers. When people are afraid of the government their is a tyranny but when Government is afraid of people their is justice. we want justice back.

  9. Is Mr Njie talking about Legitimate Court of Law or a kangaroo court?. By all indication Jamme has already shot himself in the foot by singlehandedly annulling the election on national TV.

  10. jammeh is a fool

  11. Food for thought I am so incensed to see so call lawyers defending a tyrant. If I could recall there were military in their uniforms at polling stations across the country and also Internet and phone lines were down. The president says he doesn’t want any outside influence to the outcome of the election, he also hand picked the electoral commission Mr Njie. How on earth this guy manage to win all the previous elections and this time around he lost. The answer lie with the gambians. This time round gambians had unified and spoke one language, if only gambians could see what the president is all about few years ago they would have taken him out. He is a very divisive leader very arrogant to say he would lead the Gambia for a billion years. My advice to him is this take the little dignity he has left and hand the country back. Sometimes you have to cut your loses and be a man. He preach a lot of what is good for gambian, our brothers and sisters are dying in the med in freezing waters -how can any leader not come to the aid of your citizens in need. You have to practice what you preach. Gambians deserved better, be respected. Good things come to those who wait gambians has spoken it is their democratic and god given right to have freedom of speech and free from dictatorship. God bless our motherland.

    A concerned Gambian.

  12. Seedy Njie is an opportunist and a coward. These are the very people who emboldened monster Jammeh to bully and killed Gambians. Seedy, you need to shut your mouth and go sit down and wait for the same faith that awaits Jammeh and his killer group. Yahya Jammeh is ruthless and a killer. His petition is bogus because he recently single handedly hired judges to hear his case. How do you expect them to be impartial and fair in hearing this case. Yahya is well aware of his faith after he steps down that’s why he want to drag foolish and ignorant people like you with him to his perile. Seedy, your family needs you thus don’t risk anything for killer Jammeh and his murder squad. Gambia expect you to be loyal to the will of its citizens and desist from supporting this loser.

  13. Yaya jammeh needs to know that there is live after the presidency just as there was before the presidency. Go and leave a private life with you family and remember you children need you more than ever before. This is not about country anymore and have everything to do with self.2016 is not 1994.

  14. Seddy njie Gambians can no longer entertain defense against a world wide renowned dictator. Jammeh is already defeated through the ballot box democratically but it seems like he wants to go through the barrel of the gun BUT if that’s the case he will die alone as I fully know that selfish fools like u seddy will hiding under your bed when the real time for forces to weed Jammeh out of our statehouse comes

    • The Chief Justice and head of the Judiciary wearing APRC Cap and T-Shirt during campaign. Why is that no one knows the appointment of Supreme court judges before this petition? Well, people be your own judges now. Should this man preside over the election petition filed by the APRC??? I think this man has lost all credibility and he should therefore resign or recuse himself from the Jammeh Petition to avoid further damage to his already tarnished image.

  15. Can Seddy Njie tell us whether Jammeh has the right to annul the result before his lawsuit to the supreme court.
If I remember rightly is the same Seddy Njie who was on GRTS calling on Gambian respect the rule of law and Jammeh has accepted the result in good faith why is he also following the foot steps of Jammeh in his U turn shame on Seddy Njie

    This picture must go viral

  17. The window of genuine opportunity should not be miss. Once miss it the results are bad. Lets hope good wills, will come out of it. Jammeh will listen and act accordingly.

  18. Good evening to all the contributers to what is happening in our motherland, I just want to make a point about the aftermath of the current situation. We Gambian’s are peace loving country. I am very concern to what sort of mental status the current climax is causing to people’s state of mind. The military might suffer mentally in years to come so does the peace loving Gambian’s who has never withness a war that involves outside forces with the magnitude we are anticipating. In military terms is called PTSD. I don’t want our homeland to venture into this awful senario , I am appealing to all contributers to engage with family members to be on guard and stay away from public gathering until the dust settles down. We don’t want to traumatised our sons and daughters that will become our future leaders. God bless our motherland.
