The Government of the Gambia has revealed plans to punish regional and international airlines that fails to make a monthly payment of civil aviation border control fees.
Under the radical plans to pass the funding of the country’s contract for the provision of the civil aviation and immigration security and E-visa management services on passengers, aeroplanes face being impounded or losing their rights to land in the West African country.
Airlines could also given a monthly 5% financial penalty for failing to transfer the full amount of money collected from passengers at the end of each month.
From January 2019, Gambians and tourists flying out or landing at the Banjul International Airport will pay US$40 towards a technology system for the screening of travelers arriving and departing the country through its international airport to ensure the safety of the air transportation industry
The fee will be collected ‘directly by all the airlines operating in the Gambia, from each passenger aged from three years old upon departure and arrival, either at the moment of ticket sale or at the issuing of the boarding pass.
The government has defended the controversial plan to pass the cost of airport security on passengers due to what it described as threats posed by international terrorist groups throughout the region against the safety of local citizens and foreign visitors on arrival and departure to/from the country’s international airport and in order to identify terrorists, criminals, and drug traffickers that would use the airport and thereby affect the safety of civil aviation (international and regional airlines and airports), including airline passengers, airport facilities, and aircraft.
Hamat Bah, minister of Tourism said the levy will not threaten the country’s tourism industry. He said the government has already put in place measures to prevent the industry from being affected.
Reacting to criticisms from Diaspora Gambians, Mr Bah said: “Social media will always talk”we the government will always do what we have to do in the best interest of the country as we are more concerned than anybody else with matters regarding the industry and the welfare of Gambians or other investors that have interest in the tourism sector.
“So we would not do anything that will jeopardise the interest and the stability of the industry.”
Unfortunately, Mr. Bah is running after a few dollars compared to the overall revenue that can and would be generated in an increase and or a significant uptick in overall increase in Tourist numbers and Tourism in the Gambian. There is a direct link to the number of Tourists and an increase in the number of Tourists or people who visit a country, with the Fees, Charges, and added costs to tickets, and therefore, costs of travel. At a time that the new government in Gambia is trying to increase the number of Tourists going to the Gambia, Mr. Bah may inadvertently engaging in the proverbial reckless behavior of “cutting ones nose to spite ones face”. In this case, recklessly implementating a Policy that would is counter intuitive to a Successful increase and uptick in Tourism in the Gambia. If Mr. Bah is not called in by President Barrow and taken to the woods for a lesson on similar to a “Passages of Rites” on Hospitality and Tourism business Management and Promotion as it relates to his Portfolio as the Minister of Tourism, Mr. Bah will sink Gambia’s Tourism before it is able to get up on its feet. Now is the time to provide incentives for Tourist and Diapora Gambians to visit the Gambia. Not a time to add more costs for anyone thinking of visiting the Gambia. This does not mean that the Gambia should not collect the normal and standard charges, fees and taxes that our competitors for Tourists levy and or receive. Any other added costs would only make the cost for Tourists to visit Gambia more expensive compared to our competitors and depression the uptick. Economics 101, Business Administration and Management 101 may be required reading for Mr. Bah. Don’t stunt Gambia’s Tourism by injecting it with a bitter pill that the patient does not need. The adage “Do No Harm” should be a Mantra in all Ministeries and by all Ministers and Civil Servants entrusted with the Affairs of the Gambians State. Mr. Bah needs to review and reconsider his current proposal and President Barrow and his entire Cabinet and the National Assembly need to be involved in Policy Making of this magnitude. Tourism is the Second income earner in the Gambia and as such tinkering with it should be done with extream attention and care.

Tell us in bullet points Mr Bah what measures, if any, have already been put in place to shore up the gains of struggling operators in the tourism sub sector that is already over priced. To put it bluntly Mr Hamat Bah, the Gambian tourist facilities are pricing themselves out of the international market when compared to similar destinations in the sub-region, Asia and Micronesia.
$40 for coming in and out of The Gambia when other destinations charge nothing at ports of entry? $40 to bring security to Gambian ports of entry where almost every Demba and Abisatou are beggars! Talk about veiled threats and veiled ulterior motives Hamat! This is clearly what the leadership vacuum brings The Gambia.
The Tourism ministry is also woefully incompetent and corrupt and has become worse than what we had under Yaya Jammeh. At least under Yaya, the threat of sacking or the fear of drawing his ire kept folks looking over the shoulder. Now with the Domorr Foday culture in play, the cat is asleep at the wheel so the TDA has become fertile grazing ground for the Mbaring and Mbinky Konkotolu! What I’d call, DEAL KUNDA or Darboe Kunda Sonko Duu!
