Gambia: Police Extends Activist’s Bail

Madi Jobarteh

A Gambian activist who was charged Tuesday with publishing and broadcasting false news has had his bail extended.

Madi Jobarteh is in trouble with police after he decried in a media interview the killings of three Gambian civilians by security forces during a Black Lives Matter protest outside the American Embassy.

He was released yesterday several hours after reporting to Kairaba Police Station where he was invited for questioning.

Updating his followers, Mr Jobarteh said: “I have reported to Kairaba police station this morning. Commissioner Pateh Bah said my bail is now extended to tomorrow so I should report back tomorrow at 10am. I asked why is that and he said it’s a “directive” and he won’t say from who and why! The fight for human rights and democracy continues!”
