The Gambia Prison Services (GPS) has issued a strong denial of recent bribery allegations involving female officers, describing the claims as “unfounded” and “damaging” to the reputation and integrity of the institution.
In an official statement dated May 3rd, 2025, the GPS addressed circulating rumors suggesting that it is a common practice for female officers to sign in and subsequently leave the prison premises in exchange for payment to male colleagues. The Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Prisons (ASP) Luke Jatta, strenuously denied the allegations.
“We categorically deny the recent allegations circulating regarding female officers within The Gambia Prison Services,” the statement reads. “These statements are not only unfounded but also damaging to the integrity and dedication of our personnel, especially our female officers who continue to serve with commitment and professionalism.”
The rumors emerged in the aftermath of a recent incident involving the escape of two juvenile inmates from Jeshwang Prison. While the GPS confirmed that an internal investigation was promptly launched and actions were taken, it warned against drawing conclusions based on speculation or gender-based assumptions.
“It is premature and irresponsible to attribute blame based on speculation or gender-based assumptions,” ASP Jatta stated, reaffirming that disciplinary action, if necessary, will follow due process and established protocols.
The GPS emphasized its commitment to transparency, discipline, and gender equality within its ranks. The institution reiterated that all staff, regardless of gender, are held to the same standards of accountability and that any officer found in breach of duty will be subject to the appropriate disciplinary process—not “trial by rumor.”
ASP Jatta concluded by urging the public and media to refrain from spreading unverified claims, cautioning that such allegations could undermine the morale and professionalism of the service.
The Gambia Prison Services continues to investigate the recent escape incident and has assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to maintain security and accountability within its facilities.
