Galloya FC emerged champions of the Hon. Seedy Njie League Cup on Saturday, edging out Jamano FC of Makumbaya in a final that brought together football fans from eleven West Coast Region communities.
Galloya received D40,000 and a trophy, while Jamano settled for D30,000 as runners-up.
The final also served as the official opening of a new multipurpose sports centre in Makumbaya, personally funded and inaugurated by Hon. Seedy S.K. Njie, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly.
Speaking after the inauguration, Hon. Njie said the moment was both emotional and fulfilling.
“I feel very happy, extremely happy and emotional because the contribution I made earlier on to the community is the fruit of what we are witnessing today,” he told reporters. “They made best use of the contribution I gave them for the benefit of not only Makumbaya but its surroundings.”
He described the centre and the event as part of his lasting legacy: “In the next 100 years, my grandchildren will say our grandfather was the one who donated cash for Makumbaya and its surroundings, which was used to host their first football final. When you go to the notice board, you’ll see inaugurated by Hon. Seedy S.K. Njie.”
Njie said he will continue to support the area both personally and through government advocacy.
“We will continue to support not only at a personal level but also push in government for support. Under the leadership of President Barrow, we are committed to the advancement of the people.”
While the Minister of Youth and Sports was absent due to an official assignment abroad, over 20 National Assembly members and a large delegation of government officials were present.
Teams from Bafulo, Kubarko, Kubuneh, Babylon, Abuko, Kerewan, Lamin CDC, and Kunkujang-Jattaya also participated in the tournament.
Residents say the new facility will provide much-needed recreational space for youth and boost community events in the area.
