Bayern Munich are reportedly on the verge of signing Gambian midfielder Bara Sapoko Ndiaye on a permanent basis, according to German sports publication Sport Bild.
The 18-year-old made a surprise move to the German champions during the January transfer window, joining on loan from Gambino Stars Academy.
Little was known about Ndiaye when the move was announced. Initially believed to be an attacking player, the Gambian teenager has since impressed in a deeper midfield role during his time in Germany.
Ndiaye has made four substitute appearances for Bayern Munich since joining the club, while his estimated market value has reportedly increased significantly from €300,000 to €4 million in just seven months.
Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund has now confirmed that the club is working towards making the transfer permanent.
“The final details still need to be worked out, but I expect him to start the season with us,” Freund told reporters.
Freund added that Ndiaye is expected to undergo pre-season fitness tests at Bayern’s Säbener Straße training complex before joining the squad at the club’s training camp at Lake Tegernsee.
The comments further indicate Bayern’s desire to retain the highly rated Gambian midfielder beyond his loan spell, with the final details of a permanent agreement reportedly still being negotiated.
Ndiaye’s rapid rise from relative obscurity in The Gambia to the first-team setup of one of Europe’s biggest clubs marks a significant milestone for Gambian football and could further increase international attention on the country’s emerging football talents.
