Woman Arrested Over Alleged Baby Dumping In Tallinding Farokono

Police in the Gambia are investigating a suspected case of baby dumping after a woman was arrested in Tallinding Farokono for allegedly abandoning her new-born.

The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Isatou Jawneh from Farato, was brought to the Tallinding Police Station on Sunday by residents who also carried the infant.

According to police, the new-born was rushed to Kanifing General Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Jawneh, who is reportedly married, told officers the pregnancy resulted from a relationship with her boyfriend.

Authorities say she was moved to Bundung Police Station for her safety as a large and agitated crowd had gathered at the initial location.

Police have confirmed that the baby’s body has been taken to the Banjul mortuary for preservation and a possible post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

The investigation is ongoing.
