Buba Faye, a brother to the Gambian U-17 player Edrisa Sonko Faye, has been battling for his life after he was severely beaten by family members of the Barra Alkalo Alhaji Baboucarr Faye.
Edrisa Sonko Faye confirmed the story, stating that his brother is dealing with mental health issues and has been fixated on the Barra Alkalo. Faye said that his brother had sharpened a machete after which he told a panel beater Alagie Bittaye that he intended to inflict harm on the Alkalo. Edrisa Faye, however, attributed this threat to the state of his brother’s mind.
The U-17 player alleged that the news of the threat galvanized the Alkalo’s family members into beating his brother to near-death, fracturing his leg in the process. Sonko Faye said his brother was beaten to coma. He questioned the actions of the Alkalo’s family, rhetorically asking why they took matters into their own hands instead of allowing the law enforcement to handle them. He also wondered whether it was right for someone to beat the alleged offender before handing him over to the police.
The Alkalo’s family had reportedly told the police that Buba Faye was holding a cutlass and aiming to harm the Alkalo, leading to an altercation.
According to eye-witness accounts, eight people from the Alkalo’s family, including his elder son Alagie Abdoulie Faye, assaulted Buba Faye.
Despite the severity of the assault, Alagie Abdoulie Faye was arrested but released on the same day reportedly after the intervention of the police chief. At the time of writing this story, JollofNews could not independently verify the reported involvement of IGP Touray in Abdoulie’s release.
Buba Faye is currently receiving medical care with limited mobility in his right leg and hand.
Attempts to reach the police PRO for comments were unsuccessful.
The Alkalo of Barra, Alagie Babucarr Faye, was also contacted for his side of the story, but he declined to comment, stating that “it is a police case” and he did not wish to comment.
