Senegal Stripped Of AFCON Title Two Months After Final

Senegal have been stripped of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title two months after their controversial victory in the final, with Morocco named champions in their place.

A Confederation of African Football appeal board ruled on Tuesday that Senegal breached two parts of its regulations when they walked off the pitch for 10 minutes to protest what they believed was an incorrectly awarded penalty.

As a result of the breach, the final, which finished 1-0 after extra time in Senegal’s favour, has instead been ruled a 3-0 forfeit victory for Morocco, who were hosts of the tournament.

A statement read: “The CAF appeal board decided that in application of Article 84 of the regulations of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), the Senegal National Team is declared to have forfeited the final match of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, with the result of the match being recorded as 3–0 in favour of the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF).”

Senegal’s joy could now turn to anguish

The governing body confirmed that Senegal were also in breach of Article 82 of the regulations, which also resulted in a 3-0 forfeit victory for Morocco.
