The latest appearance of President Adama Barrow’s son at a state function has sparked an intense debate on the internet with many commentators questioning the rationale behind the “public relations exercises” of the President’s son, while many others expressed fear over the possibility of dynastic succession.
However, it would appear the fear of dynastic succession is not justified as President Barrow himself said last year that he had no intention of “burdening his children” with the mammoth responsibility of running a country.
However, when Mr. Barrow’s son was once again seen at an official function, the internet sizzled as Gambians, both at home and in the Diaspora, engaged in passionate debate over what future plan President Barrow has for his son. Some even suggested that the president may have a grand plan for his son.
Some internet users even commented that The Gambia is drifting towards the Abdoulaye Wade/Karim scenario. The Senegalese were up in arms against their former President when he wanted to impose his son on the masses.
President Barrow sometime last year suggested that he did not see anyone in the NPP that can ensure the governing party’s political longevity and continuity other than himself, further hinting that he is the glue that binds the ruling party together, hence his decision to seek a third mandate.
