W/African Leaders To Take ‘Major Decision’ On Gambia, Nigeria Says

Ecowas leaders met Jammeh to persuade him to handover power

(JollofNews) – West African leaders will take a “major decision” on the political impasse in Gambia at a meeting in Ghana on Saturday, a spokesman for the Nigerian presidency said on Friday.

The West African ECOWAS bloc said last month it would take all necessary steps to uphold the result of a Dec. 1 election in Gambia, where veteran President Yahya Jammeh says he will not step down after losing to Adama Barrow.

ECOWAS has placed standby forces on alert in case Jammeh attempts to stay in power after his mandate ends on Jan. 19. Jammeh has called the bloc’s stance “a declaration of war”, and said he will defend himself.

“A major decision on the impasse is expected to be taken at that all-important meeting,” said Garba Shehu, spokesman for Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari.

“President Buhari is the chief mediator of the crisis and he is committed to ensuring that the logjam is resolved.”

Jammeh initially accepted his loss in the Dec. 1 election, shocking Gambians who have lived through his repressive rule since he took power in a 1994 coup, and triggering celebrations in the streets.

But a week later changed his mind, saying the electoral commission had been biased by “foreign influences” and vowing to hang on despite regional and international condemnation.

Jammed says ECOWAS has no right to interfere in Gambia’s internal affairs, and that Gambians should await the outcome of a legal challenge that his APRC party has lodged at the Supreme Court.

  1. Shock and awe is what’s required. No pussyfooting around, you can’t negotiate with irrational and evil character like Yaya Jammeh. Force is the only language he’ll understand.

    • You drank a lot of herbal mix perhaps. Those herbs do serve purpose but in these times of modern medicine, who knows its better to take those herbs to the lab for approval for save use. Some of the wild animals too are not good preys. They are hosts for different types rabbies that can cause funny psychologic effects on one’s mental state. They are hundred different way in getting one’s heart savage. They way people are seeing national situation in a back-pedalling stroke must have something to do with the environment and their contact with it. His love for the Gambia…….Whose love for the Gambia? Jammeh’s?..come on..The university of the GAmbia got a lot to do.

  3. Please the man deserves some respect,he has ruled for 22years and has done a lot for the country and the people.
Though he has his bad sides which is normal,as no human being is perfect, let us not forget the good side too so easily and so fast.
Let’s pray that he changes his mind,so that peace can reign, this is a Gambian problem and can be handled the Gambian way,so please stop the harsh and unreasonable languages on him.Remember he is old enough to be a dad to some of you.

    • Kutakoma

Jammeh derseves respect but not any longer. Disrespect is what you deserved by doing what is right and the choice of people. He worked and developed the country but also using the country to get rich helping other countries whiles his own is suffering why would he give millions to just ordinary musicians individuals. If he had used does millions to develope the country could be another good syde of it but he is blind and cannot see

PLEASE STEP DOWN AND LET GAMBIANS HAVE PEACE…..

    • A man who don’t respect human life don’t deserve respect, he has not done anything for gambia it doesn’t matter what so call development he bring cos I can’t see it. The man is only there for himself, and so called loyalist . He is a coward, a thief, a killer and rapist and enemy of humanity and Islam not to mention Allah. He is Satan my friend no respect for him. I call him a fuckin bitch and thats what he is if you don’t like it go fuck yourself, may be a father to you not to me he is a fucking bastard. How many more he has to kill, in 22 years all he bring to gambians is fear and sorrow by brutalising us. If he would deserve respect he would get but he don’t deserve it because he has no respect for himself and for anyone. He been insulting our elders the mandinka elders, Sarahule elders, jolas, our Muslim elders, if he can’t respect those who are old enough to be his father then he would never get the respect he wants. He got to go and he will and he will be accounted for all the killings and disappearances, torture not to mention the rampant corruption as he use to say. I can’t finish talking about that pig so I leave it here for now.

  4. hello fellow Gambians,

Remember that God is watching over us in this crucial time of our lives. What is politics to destroy the lives of innocent people and their properties? If the contending parties cannot solve their problems peacefully then we the voters are ready to go back to the polls and vote transparently who we wish to work for us. message to Senegal and the ECOWAS, we do not wish to see anyone come in and destroy lives and properties in the name of intervention. We Gambian Voters are ready to sacrifice our hard earned incomes to go back to the polls rather to see the lives of our innocent people lost in the name of dirty politics. long live The Gambia long live the peaceful and tolerant and exceptional people of The Gambia. Gambians loves each other would not standby to see the politicians destroy lives and properties of our dear and peaceful motherland The Gambia.

  5. XxxX you call yourself what do you not understand from the last election, you sounded like a yaya supporter. Why don’t you do us all a favour and keep your opinion to yourself and not waste our time. Are you watching the news about Ghana people have spoken there president elect is taking office. It is only yaya in Gambia that is going against the will of his nation. It has to be his way or no way. You think elections happen with a click of your finger. Yaya is been endorsed by people like you, who doesn’t have a clue what they are talking about. I don’t like bullies they make my stomach churn. Once again go and do some reading about the plight of Gambiaa in the last 22 years then you will have a clue what you talking about. From an educated Gambian who cares about my motherland. God bless to all true and god fearing Gambian’s not liars and bullies.

  6. Ecowas leaders I commended you for trying your best, I for once had a firm belief that the only way this situation is going to be resolve is to speak the same language as yaya. It has been over a month since the election took place in Gambia. The incoming leader religious leaders the African nations and other professional bodies were all apealing to yaya to step down, it all fell on death ears. Now is the time for action no words ‘ every day passes he is getting a foot hold and getting arrogance. Gambian’s deserved better, they didn’t vote for this, how can one man goes against the wishes of the nation and still been molly cuddle by ECOWAS. It is time the African nations stand up to yaya and set example ‘ everyday that passes it is an opportunity missed. They are going to be held responsible if anything happen to Gambian’s because of their Un decisiveness. They are dealing with a very unhinged individual, and very unpridictable. My understanding is in life there are leaders and followers, Ecowas is been chosen to lead not to follow what yaya said and do. The credibility of this organisation is put to the test by one man against the will of the people. God bless Gambia.
