Following the National Assembly’s decisive rejection of the 2024 draft constitution, I extend my congratulations to the Speaker, members of the National Assembly, the Minister of Justice, and President Barrow for upholding the principles of democracy and allowing a robust debate to unfold.
As we move forward, it is crucial that we seize this opportunity to craft a new constitution that truly reflects the will and aspirations of the Gambian people. Drawing on the lessons of our past, including the 1997 constitution and the experiences gained from the 2020 and 2024 draft constitutions, we can create a document that stands the test of time.
This process must be inclusive, engaging Gambians from all walks of life, in the country and in the diaspora, to ensure that the new constitution is born out of collective wisdom and participation. Let us work together to enact a constitution that will serve as the bedrock of our democracy and guide our nation towards a brighter future.
