Former National Assembly Members from across Gambia’s political spectrum have thrown their support behind United Democratic Party (UDP) leader and 2026 presidential candidate, Ousainu Darboe, in a move that could further strengthen his campaign ahead of the December presidential election.
The former lawmakers, led by their President, Lamin KT Jammeh, met with Mr. Darboe on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, to formally endorse his candidacy and discuss plans to campaign for him ahead of the polls.
The delegation comprises former National Assembly Members who have served under different political parties, according to the UDP Media and Communications Team.
During the meeting, the former lawmakers conveyed their confidence in Mr. Darboe’s leadership and outlined their intention to actively support his presidential campaign as the country heads toward the 2026 election.
Mr. Darboe welcomed the delegation at his office and expressed his appreciation for their support, describing their commitment as an important contribution to the political journey ahead.
The endorsement comes at a time of heightened political activity in The Gambia, with parties, candidates and political movements intensifying their mobilisation efforts ahead of the presidential election.
The UDP said the growing support for its leader reflects what it described as a “renewed sense of hope and confidence” in the party’s vision for national renewal.
The party further maintained that, working together with the Gambian people, it can build a more prosperous, democratic and inclusive country.
The development is likely to add momentum to Mr. Darboe’s campaign as the UDP seeks to consolidate support across the country ahead of the 2026 presidential contest.
