Hopes Dashed As Authorities Renege On Promise To Release 27 Protesters Saturday Morning

The Gambian authorities Friday indicated that the 27 detained youth protesters will be released at 10 am today but reports reaching JollofNews intimated that the detainees are still being held at various police stations.

Representatives of the group Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA) were on Friday involved in talks held at the National Youth Council aimed at difusing the tension around the continued detention of the protesters. Lamin K. Saidy, the youth adviser to the Gambia leader, took part in the negotiations. A representative from the State Intelligence Services (SIS) was also present during the talks.

The detainees were rounded up in the Gambian capital, Banjul as they came out to protest for ransparency and accountability in the disposal of Jammeh’s seized assets.
