(JollofNews) – As if being sacked and detained incommunicado for over two months by the feared Gambian National Intelligence Agency (NIA) is not enough, state prosecutors
in the Gambia have slapped more criminal charges against the country’s former Secretary General and minister of Presidential Affairs.
Momodou Sabally, 40, who was the right-hand man of President Yahya Jammeh and darling of the Gambian regime, was yesterday charged at the High Court in Banjul with economic crime, abuse of office, neglecting official duty and giving false information to a public servant.
Prosecutors said while serving as Secretary General, Mr Sabally in flagrant abuse of his office last May caused the Gambia Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation (SSHFC) to lose D402, 500 by unduly influencing it to fund a Youth Career Development Programme without recourse to due process.
They added that Mr Sabally in May last year also caused the Gambia Government to lose D38, 424 paid to him as per diem by neglecting to attend the inauguration ceremony of President Jacob Zuma.
Prosecutors said the former Secretary General also committed an offence by willfully and negligently delaying the departure of the Vice President’s flight from South Africa for 45 minutes after she attended the inauguration ceremony of President Jacob Zuma.
Prosecutors also accused the former Secretary General of giving false information to President Yahya Jammeh after he presented two vehicles being the property of one Alasan Ndoye to the president as a gift.
Mr Sabally pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded at the Mile Two Prisons pending his bail application.
The case continues.
