(JollofNews) – Journalist Alagie Abdoulie Ceesay, the managing director of the firebrand Taranga FM radio station in The Gambia has finally been charged by the state with sedition.
Ceesay was set to appear at the Banjul Magistrate court on Tuesday evening, according to an intelligence source speaking to the African Press Agency on condition of anonymity.
He is accused of distributing photos of President Yahya Jammeh with two people in which the Gambian leader is depicted pointing a gun and using a cell phone, thereby committing an offence.
Mr. Ceesay who has been detained for over two weeks was previously held by National Intelligence Agency operatives last month.
He was rearrested days after he was released by the NIA and has been in custody since.
The Gambia Press Union and the Committee to Protect Journalists have urged the government of The Gambia to release the journalist.
