Detained Gambian Opposition Members Slapped With More Charges

(JollofNews) – State prosecutors in the Gambia have today slapped 19 detained supporters of the United Democratic Party (UDP) with another charged of criminal offence.

The UDP supporters who were arrested for taking part in two days of  rare anti-government protest, are accused of conspiring to commit felony contrary to the laws of the Gambia.

UDP’s leader, Ousainou Darboe and 18 of his supporters namely; Femi Peters, Lamin Dibba, Kemesseng Jammeh, Lamin Jatta, Yaya Bah, Babucarr Camara, Fakebba Colley, Ismaila Ceesay, Momodou Fatty, Dodou Ceesay, Samba Ceesay, Mamud Kinteh, Mfamara Kuyateh, Fanta Darboe, Lamin Njie, Juguna Suso, Momodou LK Sanneh, Yaya Jammeh were last week jointly charged with multiple counts of criminal offences.

They are accused of taking part in an unlawful assembly, riot, incitement of violence, riotously interfering with traffic, holding a procession without a license and disobeying an order to disperse from an unlawful procession.

They pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Meanwhile another UDP supporter, Masanneh Lalo Jawla, who was also nicked by police during the protest has appeared in court, charged with the same criminal offences.

He pleaded not guilty.
