(JollofNews) – A judge in the Gambia has denied bail to over a dozen opposition members who were indicted for “unlawful assembly” and other charges.
Justice O. Ottaba of the Special Criminal Court in Banjul Wednesday ruled releasing the United Democratic Party (UDP) members will send a bad signal to the public because their acts are a threat to the economy and national security.
The UDP supporters who have been held incommunicado since their arrest on 14th and 16 April 2016, are accused of conspiring to commit felony, unlawful assembly, riot, incitement of violence, riotously interfering with traffic, holding a procession without a license and disobeying an order to disperse from an unlawful procession.
Another group of UDP members, including the party’s leader, Ousainou Darboe are facing similar charges and were also denied bail last week.
The accused persons were remand in custody and the case continues on May 17.
