(JollofNews) – The leader of Gambia’s opposition Gambia Moral Congress (GMC) has welcomed Dr Isatou Touray’s bid for the presidency of the West African state.

Mai Ahmad Fatty said he has no doubts about her patriotism and service to our country, and her proven commitment to her convictions.

Dr Isatou, a human rights activist and prominent advocate for the eradication of harmful traditional practices such as female genital mutilation is the first female to vie for the top job since the Gambia gained independence in 1965.

The Gambia will hold presidential election in December 2016, with legislative and local polls to follow in April 2017 and April 2018.

The small West African nation of less than two million people has been ruled by President Yahya Jammeh since 1994, when the then 29-year-old seized power in a bloodless coup.

Mr Jammeh who is eyeing a fifth term was re-elected in 2011 with 72 per cent of the

record and proven integrity to contest on.

“Unlike some typical career politicians who recently discovered the ‘convenience’ to contest, with questionable characters as key advisers, and using the bandwagon with crafted fanfare, she has a strong public service record and proven integrity to contest on, Mr Fatty wrote on his Facebook page.

“GMC looks forward to pragmatic partnership with all “genuine” stakeholders. It should be very clear, and at any price, that GMC shall openly fight against any arrangement or compromise, that would likely mortgage the future of the Gambia to certain vested interests or few persons. Unity, yes; but not unity at the peril of the nation’s sustainable interests.”

Let gambians opposition parties format a coalitions against yaya jammeh to kick him out power dats the only solutions to defeat if gambians want change

  2. Even there is no coalition Jammeh can be booted out of office. The way oppositions are arranging to unite as united front against Jammeh is the way the electorates should make options. That is: if coalition is possible we all (electorates) should vote for the coalition and if that fails we(electorates) still protest on our votes and vote for the oppositions, still we can make changes. As UDP supporter I only have confidence in Mamma Kandeh to lead the coalition because he is the most popular opposition leader in the Gambia today. Let’s put tribalism aside and go for national interest. Jammeh will never hand over power to UDP we all know that, so to avoid confusion and to have mercy for Ousainou Darboe and all the UDP members Serving jail term in the prison let UDP allow a man like Kandeh to lead the coalition and not them even they are the biggest party. Kanilai monster will die on power than to hand over power to UDP. The right man for the coalition is Mamma Kandeh, am not his fan but he is the man for the way forward in this year’s presidential election.
