(JollofNews) – President Yahya Jammeh will never be allowed to subvert the will of the Gambian people, says Mai Ahmad Fatty of the opposition coalition.
He said the Gambian people have spoken in a clear voice in the December elections and their will must be respected in accordance with the laws of the country.
Tension is high in the Gambia and security officers are put on stand-by after President Jammeh unilaterally annulled the results of the December 1st election which was won by Opposition Candidate Adama Barrow and called for fresh elections.
Mr Jammeh, 51, who has ruled the Gambia since July 1994 had initially conceded defeat and praised the country’s electoral system as “the most transparent election in the whole world,” adding that he would not contest the result.
He later changed his mind and filed a lawsuit at the supreme court asking it to declare him winner of the elections.
Mr Jammeh said he had pulled more votes in the election than his opposition rival and should therefore be declared the duly elected president of the Gambia instead of Adama Barrow.
But Mai Ahmad Fatty, a senior member of the opposition coalition warned that although he and his colleagues have stated that nobody’s personal ambition is worth the blood of a single Gambian or person, they are ready to enforce the legitimate will of the electorates without any equivocation.
“There is no way out in subverting the will of the voters,” he said.
“The universal voice of humanity is to tow the path of honour and dignity. President-elect Barrow and the Coalition state that nobody’s personal ambition, is worth the blood of a single Gambian or person. Yet, we shall enforce the legitimate will of our electorates, without any equivocation.”
West African regional grouping Ecowas has announced that Gambia’s neighbour, Senegal will lead military intervention to oust the President Yahya Jammeh if he refuses to step down when his mandate expires on 19 January.
“Stand-by forces” were on alert and would be deployed “to restore the people’s wish” if mediators, led by Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari, failed to persuade Mr Jammeh to give up power, said Marcel Alain de Souza, the chairman of the Ecowas commission.
He added that it was not Ecowas’ “wish to set alight the zone” and if Mr Jammeh “loves” his people, he should “negotiate an exit door calmly”.
Mr. Jammeh should be gunned out if refuses and stay beyond a quick second of exit date and time. He’s selfish and do not have the interest of The Gambian people at heart. The Gambia democracy must be protected for the general good of larger major of The Gambian people. The people spoke through their votes, that mandate must STAND.
Congratulations President-elect Barrow.
More charges will be added to Jammeh’s sheet for his actions to disrespect the constitution of the Gambia.
He regarded himself as no law abiding citizens and above the laws. He insulted Gambians numerous times by acting disrespectful to the people.
Jammeh is a real treat to the region. He should be taken seriou by ecowas and act to disarm him before the treat will widen further.
He cannot be trusted. Ecowas should act now period.
