AFCON 2023: Gambia Players Boycott Training

The Gambia’s preparations for the African Cup of Nations took a turn for the worse on Tuesday night during a scheduled training at the Independence Stadium, Bakau.

The scorpions reportedly boycotted their scheduled open training session at the Independence Stadium, citing unpaid bonuses as the reason.

Head coach Tom Sanfiet and his technical team were present at the Stadium. However, the players have reportedly chosen to remain at the hotel, refusing to join the training session.

Tuesday night’s training session was supposed to be the last before the team leaves for Ivory Coast.

During his press briefing, coach Tom Sanfiet admitted that the players’ absence from today’s practice was linked to financial concerns.

Saintfiet did not disclose the total sum of the unpaid bonuses.

He however revealed that he received a call from the team captain before the scheduled practice, notifying him of the players’ decision not to participate.

The Gambia have been drawn in Group C with defending champions Senegal, four-time winners Cameroun and Guinea.
