Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment To Strengthening Tourism Ties With Gambia

The Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) has reaffirmed its dedication to deepening tourism collaboration with the Gambia, in a renewed drive to promote regional integration and boost the West African tourism market.

This renewed commitment was made during a high-level visit by a four-man Gambian delegation, led by Hon. Yankuba Darboe, Chairman of the Brikama Area Council. The delegation was warmly received at NTDA headquarters in Abuja by Mr. Richard Ovie Esewhaye, Director overseeing the Office of the Director General, alongside other management staff.

Hon. Darboe, speaking during the visit, described Nigeria as “Gambia’s 37th state,” highlighting the historic and cultural ties between the two nations. He noted that tourism is a cornerstone of Gambia’s economy and emphasised the need for Nigeria’s support in promoting Gambia as a preferred travel destination within the region.

“We see Nigeria as a strategic partner. With your large population and vibrant travel community, Nigeria offers a ready market for Gambian tourism,” Darboe said. He also stressed the importance of the ECOWAS Free Movement Protocol as a catalyst for greater cultural and economic integration in West Africa.

In response, Mr. Esewhaye praised the long-standing bilateral relationship between the NTDA and the Gambia Tourism Board. He referenced previous engagements, including those held at the Gambia Investment Forum, but cautioned that it was time to move from talk to action.

“Gambia, though small, has demonstrated impressive success in tourism. Nigeria can draw lessons from their experience—particularly in areas of cultural exchange, revenue generation, and human capacity development,” Esewhaye said.

He further proposed the establishment of a joint technical committee to pinpoint actionable areas for cooperation, ensuring both nations benefit from the partnership.

Also speaking, Mr. F.O. Anumba, Director of Special Duties at NTDA, raised the issue of the absence of direct air travel between Nigeria and The Gambia. He urged stakeholders to explore the possibility of establishing direct flight routes to enhance tourism flow and foster stronger people-to-people ties.

The visit concluded on a celebratory note as Hon. Darboe presented Mr. Esewhaye with an Outstanding Leadership and Humanitarian Award, recognising his role in advancing regional tourism cooperation.

This visit marks a significant step forward in consolidating tourism ties between Nigeria and The Gambia, as both nations look to harness their cultural richness and shared history for mutual economic growth.
