Denying Protest Permits Violates Rights & Endangers Security

Peaceful protests are a fundamental constitutional right enshrined in our constitution. The police should not deny peaceful processions without a valid reason, and it is illogical to deny permits to individuals or groups without justification or a clear timeline for approval.

I advise the Inspector General of Police that granting Gambians the right to protest, as you have publicly stated that there are no security concerns in The Gambia, is in the best interest of the institution.

Furthermore, allowing peaceful protests is less expensive and more efficient, reliable, productive, less problematic than managing agitated crowds, both financially physically and logistically.

Therefore, granting permits to the GALA youths or any other group will facilitate the police’s role in maintaining peace, tranquility, and public safety in our republic. It is essential to refrain from making politically motivated decisions and instead adopt a more nuanced approach, which will enhance the credibility, trustworthiness, and respectability of the institution you’re heading in the eyes of Gambians Anyone who fails to provide you with honest feedback would be dishonest.
