Gambia 2016: All Candidates Cleared To Contest Election

(JollofNews)- The Gambia’s electoral commission has cleared the nomination of all the three candidates seeking to contest next month’s presidential election.

As reported earlier by your JollofNews, all the candidates submitted  for scrutiny during their nominations a declaration of their assets and showed proof to the electoral commission that they have each got the backing of not less than 10,000 registered voters from various regions of the country. The candidates also paid a deposit of D1 million and showed proof of their income tax clearance.

The electoral commission said following the scrutiny of the paperwork, both candidates including President Yahya Jammeh and his challengers, Adama Barrow of the opposition coalition and Mamma Kandeh of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) have met the requirements stipulated in the country’s election law and constitution.

It added that the GDC will use  purple as it’s party colour with open calabash in two palms. The opposition coalition will use grey as its colour and a right hand with the index finger pointing upwards as its symbol.

The ruling APRC will use green as its colour and a palm tree with a hoe and paddle as its symbol.

Campaigns for the election will last from 16th November to 29th November while election will take place on 1st December.

886, 578 Gambians expected to vote, according official figures from the electoral commission.

The country operates a simple majority vote system and a candidate who has a simple majority of votes would be declared winner.
