Gambia: The Foni Conundrum Poses A Threat To Peace And Security

Dr Binneh Minteh

(JollofNews) – The emerging situation in Foni requires a firm policy response on the part of the transition government. The question here is the legitimacy and illegitimacy of their agenda. Evidently their call against ECOMIG forces is unconstitutional, illegitimate and poses a threat to the peace and security of the state.

ECOMIG has a solid international mandate to protect the legitimate aspirations of citizens and enforce Peace and Security in any part of the Gambia.

Protesting against the presence of ECOMIG forces is therefore a blatant transgression of the legitimate aspirations of citizens and a threat to the peace and stability of the State.

With the intermittent eruption of tension in Foni since the collapse of the Jammeh dictatorship, the new administration must adopt a zero tolerance policy for all mobilization efforts threatening peace and Security. And this must include protest efforts against regional forces or court ordered laws to surrender frozen assets of the disgraced former President.

Perhaps it is time to be tougher.

  1. Easier said than done my friend>> perhaps you would like to elaborate ?

  2. Exactly. Please elaborate further on how to keep the situation under control.

  3. He just said zero tolerance so am not sure what more elaboration that requires. Anyone who comes out to protest peacefully is protected under the law but those who seek violence will be arrested and dealt with based on the law. These people have been used to not being told what to do for 22 yrs so unless they realise on day one that there will be consequences for stopping agents of the law from performing their duties، it will become a habit.

  4. No overreaction. The people of Foni particularly Kanilai, had a rude awakening with the demise of Jammeh dictatorship. In Jammeh heydays, this part of the country could not see the end of jammeh, not to talk of an abrupt one. Added to this trauma is the exiling of the one time mighty son. Therefore, I think Fonis need time to recuperate from this loss, by all accounts, great privilege. They will come to terms with the new reality and overreacting to their momentarily agitation is uncalled for. What is required, is a miminum security presence that allows the people to demonstrate peacefully but at the same time ready to hold anyone accountable to destruction of property and harm to life. Obstruction to fulfilling state legally sanctioned activities as regards to Jammeh property in kanilai must be sanctioned. The people of Kanilai must allow the courts to determine the fate of these properties.

  5. The people of Kanilai should know that they will never again set the agenda for the rest of the country. Free electricity, free water supply, subsidized foodstuffs and other privileges that you enjoyed but denied to the rest of the country is not coming back. You should be thankful to President Barrow and his government for their humanity as sending bulldozers to raze down your village will befit the crimes committed by your sons against innocent citizens of our nation. A village drenched with the blood of the innocence. How many Gambians and non Gambians were killed and buried in Kanilai or its environs? Shame on you savage unpatriotic idiots. Shame on you for being an accessory to the worst human rights violations in our nation’s history. Shame on you for benefiting from the ill gotten gains of Yahya Jammeh. You can protest all you like but the Senegalese Military are here to stay. Those of you who have problem with their presence can leave and follow your illegitimate disgraced son Jammeh into exile. Gambia will never again be a breeding ground for injustice, lawlessness, nepotism or Jola hegemony or Empire.
    God bless our beloved nation.

Total utter conspiracy, we protesting in foni lead civilian constitute an act of national treat and those done during the Jammeh including the one lead by solo sandeng not a treat abd justified.
Foni will remain as gambains no matter who is president and that, s the fact. All the game play to soil the foni because of Jammeh will not work. Those protesting have the same rights as did Ousainou Darbe and co protest, as did solo sandeng and co. What is the difference here. Are some more animals than others?
Lets remove all forms of emotions, perceptions and tribalism in what we do and how we analyse issues. Justice for solo sandeng is right today and justice for Haruna Jatta will aldo be right some day. Who killed Haruna Jatta and why? will certainly also be answered
