The Nigerian Army has appointed Lieutenant Colonel Yahaya Mohammed Abdullahi as the new commander of its contingent serving under the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG).
Lt. Col. Abdullahi officially assumed command during a change of command ceremony held on Monday, taking over from Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Agada, who completed a one-year deployment leading the Nigerian contingent in The Gambia.
The handover marked the formal transfer of operational leadership within Nigeria’s peacekeeping force, which forms part of the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia supporting peace, security and stability in the country.
During the ceremony, the outgoing commander congratulated his successor and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the contingent.
“I have every confidence in his ability to lead the contingent with professionalism, dedication and distinction,” Lt. Col. Agada said.
He also called on officers and soldiers to give the new commander their full support, stressing that the success of the mission depends on the discipline, commitment and cooperation of personnel.
The ceremony was attended by officers and soldiers of the Nigerian contingent before members of the outgoing contingent departed The Gambia after completing their one-year peacekeeping deployment.
Lt. Col. Abdullahi now assumes responsibility for leading the newly deployed Nigerian contingent serving under ECOMIG in The Gambia.
