President Barrow Names New Military Chief

President Adama Barrow has approved a major reshuffle in the leadership of The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF), appointing new commanders following the resignation of the former Chief of Defence Staff.

Acting under the powers vested in him by Section 190(1A) of the 1997 Constitution, President Barrow announced a series of promotions and appointments that take immediate effect.

Major General Ousman Gomez, who had been serving as Acting Chief of Defence Staff, has been confirmed as the substantive Chief of Defence Staff following the resignation of his predecessor.

As part of the changes, Brigadier General Sait Njie, the current Commander of The Gambia National Army, has been appointed Deputy Chief of Defence Staff.

Brigadier General Yaya Drammeh, formerly Commander of the Republican National Guards, takes over as Commander of The Gambia National Army, replacing Brigadier General Njie.

Meanwhile, Colonel Alhagie Sanneh, who has been serving as Defence Attaché at The Gambia Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, has been recalled and appointed Commander of the Republican National Guards.

The appointments, which take immediate effect, mark a significant reorganisation of the GAF’s senior command following the resignation of the former Chief of Defence Staff.

As Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Barrow is constitutionally empowered to appoint the Chief of Defence Staff and other senior military officers. The latest changes are expected to ensure continuity in the leadership and operations of the Gambia Armed Forces.
