Gambia 2021: 6 Cleared To Contest Election

The Gambia’s electoral commission has cleared six candidates to contest next month’s Presidential election.

Over 20 candidates submitted their nomination papers this week, but after going through the lot, the electoral commission trimmed the numbers down to six.

The chairman of the electoral commission said the candidates, President Adama Barrow of the National People’s Party (NPP), Ousainou Darboe of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Mama Kandeh of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), Halifa Sallah of the People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), Abdoulie Ebrima Jammeh of the National Union Party (NUP) and independent candidate Essa Mbye Faal, have all fulfilled the requirement to contest the election on December 4th.

Similarly, 14 candidates were disqualified for not meeting the requirements. They include Independent candidates Marie Sock, Ebrima Tabora Manneh –
Momodou Bah, Bankole Yao Jojo Ahadzie, Joseph Henry Joof, Papa Faal and Matarr Nyang Lamin Satu Bojang  Alliance for National Re-orientation and Development (ANRD), Mai Ahmad Fatty of the Gambia Moral Congress (GMC), Dr Ismaila Ceesay of Citizen Alliance (CA), Sheikh Tijan Hydara of the Gambia Alliance for National Unity (GANU) and Yusupha Dumbuya of the Democratic Party (DP).

Meanwhile , the nomination of Alieu Sowe of the Gambia Action Party (GAP) was rejected for fraud.
